Phantom Power… Ooooh, Scaaary!

I was reading the Customer Green Stories at Canadian Tire’s site – I know, what a loser, eh?  – and I came across this nugget from “top 1000 contributor” Anon123 in Toronto:
Recently, I’ve been hearing more and more about phantom power…[that] your TV, computer and other appliances use when they are turned off… If you [...]

Power Saving Coupons – Just in Time

I was on the home page of my city’s electricity provider, Horizon Utilities, today and I clicked on a promo called Power Savings Event offered by the Ontario Power Authority.
I discovered there a dozen coupons – worth a total of $100 – for a bunch of power-saving devices including:

Motion sensor switches
Energy Star indoor light fixtures
Programmable [...]

Our Attic Needs a Hatch… What Attic?

This video from Green Communities – another not-for-profit org that conducts home energy audits (not ours, we used Green Tech Services) discusses how common it is for the attic to be a major source of heat loss.
That’s because attics are often poorly ventilated and insufficiently insulated, and the attic hatch is not properly sealed.

Knock, Knock, Knocking on Heather’s Door

Replacing our ratty old wooden front door is what you’d call a “small ticket item” – meaning the ecoEnergy Retrofit rebate for it is only $80 from the government.
Sigh… We call this “Heather’s door” because it is Heather’s dream to bring light into our coffin-like kitchen with virtually no light from the small, west-facing window. [...]

Our Laundry Room IS a Cold Cellar

One of the biggest problem we have is inadequate insulation on all three levels of our house. The facts, according to our home audit report:

Federal incentive: $850
EnerGuide Rating Improvement: 6.9 points
Wall Insulation: Increase exterior wall insulation by an amount [...]

(Full disclosure: I have recently been contracted by Horizon Utilities to assist with a project.)
To make that [...]

Insulation – Boring or Not?

UK couple Rob and Sue Veck were apologetic as they documented their insulation job on their GreenHomeDiary blog (and video below, from their YouTube channel) with the commentary, “day 4 & 5 – Installing Insulation is getting a bit boring.”

Over-insulated Manor
Meanwhile, another couple in Britain is trying to sell the ‘over insulated’ house they built [...]

Choosing Retailers for their Green-ess

We are going to start buying products for our eco renovation – and it just makes sense for us to use a retailer that is doing more than talking about helping the planet. To that end, I discovered that RONA – the largest Canadian distributor and retailer of hardware – is a sponsor of [...]

So Much to Appreciate this Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving and I type this while waiting for my parents and my nephew to arrive for turkey dinner. (The whole house is filled with smoke, my eyes burning. My husband is out reffing hockey, and I put the bird in the oven like he told me too, at 425 degrees, but something must [...]

The Government Makes Good on its First Rebate

Today we got a cheque in the mail from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for $150 to help repay us for the home energy audit report we got in late August, after getting the audit done in mid-August.
The report cost us $350, not including tax. I thought we would get half of that back [...]
